The Torchbearer Award for Extraordinary Impact in and Beyond Their Local Communities

Team Challenge: Project Outreach-Real to Reel

The Freeman-Deep Run High School presentation embraced the characteristics of the Torchbearer Award. The team took a global problem, a personal connection and the skill and talents of many people and found a dramatic and effective solution. Their deep understanding of gender bias issues for girls in Pakistan combined with a friendship with a fellow student from Pakistan motivated them to provide school supplies for girls in Pakistan. The time and distance between Virginia and Pakistan did not stop the—Skype and internet access brought this project to a successful conclusion.

In addition this project honored diversity with the sale of artwork representing many themes and media. This Freeman-Deep Run High School project made a personal connection and used resources in a creative way to influence education for women half-way around the world.

Renaissance Award: Wakefield School “Call of DI: Special Ops”

The Renaissance Award for Outstanding Design, Engineering of Performance

Team Challenge: Project Outreach-Real to Reel

Secondary Level

Wakefield School gave an extraordinary, well-rounded presentation of their project. They raised money for Homes for Troops through selling armbands, collecting corporate donations, and dramatic readings of a letter from a returning soldier.

Their presentation emphasized and highlighted the diverse methods they used to raise money. From a three-panelled scene depicting before, during, and after 9-11 to mannequins made of chicken wire and clothing made from Rt. 66 chips bags, these students spent hours creating a set that was a dynamic part of their presentation.

DaVinci Award: Powhatan School “The Fantastic Four”

DaVinci Award for Outstanding Creativity

Team Challenge: Project Outreach-Real to Reel

Middle Level

We believe Powhatan School clearly exemplifies exceptional creativity. Who else could bring President Sue, president of the United States and Air Force One into a DI performance so convincingly. Their creation of a fully funded activity book for support of local homeless orphans will give them two fun activities to do throughout the year. Their Gangdam Style inspired song detailed their efforts and their huge success. This team took risks through their face to face efforts to raise thousands of dollars to make life better for less fortunate members of the community.
